Your Kid Isn’t “Too Much.” They’re Probably Carrying Too Much.
Maybe your child has gone from telling you everything to answering every question with “I don’t know.” Maybe anxiety has taken over your mornings, bedtime, school drop-offs, or the entire damn household. Maybe they are angry all the time, shutting everyone out, getting in trouble, falling apart over seemingly small things, or trying so hard to be okay that no one realizes how much they are struggling.
You have tried checking in. You have tried giving them space. You have tried consequences, reassurance, pep talks, rewards, taking away the phone, and at least one conversation that started calmly and somehow ended with a slammed door. Nothing seems to land, and now you are wondering whether you are helping, making it worse, or completely missing something.
Here is what I want you and your child to know: They are not broken. Their behavior is not their entire identity. And they do not need another adult lecturing them, analyzing everything they say, or deciding who they are before they have had the chance to figure it out for themselves.
I work with children and teens ages 8–18 who are dealing with anxiety, trauma, overwhelming emotions, identity questions, or life simply feeling like too much. Therapy with me is a place where they can show up as they are. Quiet, angry, anxious, skeptical, awkward, funny, unsure, guarded, or completely over the whole idea of therapy, it is all allowed.
We will get curious about what is happening underneath the reactions, arguments, avoidance, or shutdowns. Your child can learn how to understand what they are feeling, say what they need, handle hard moments, and trust themselves a little more. There will be real conversations and practical tools, but there will also be room to breathe. No judgment. No shame. No treating your child like a diagnosis with a backpack.
Caregivers matter too. You should not have to keep guessing what your child needs while feeling like every move you make is somehow the wrong one. I collaborate with caregivers while also protecting the trust young people need in order to speak honestly. We are not choosing sides. We are building a team around your child without taking away their voice.
Your child does not have to become easier, quieter, or more convenient to deserve support. They deserve a place where someone will look beyond the behavior, take their experience seriously, and help them discover that they are capable of getting through difficult things.
Let’s help them feel like themselves again—or maybe finally feel safe enough to figure out who that is chloe@aphoenix.org or call 719-425-8891.
